The Sisterhood of the Traveling Manpants {It’s My SITS Day!}

Close up2

I need you.

Although I don’t want to admit it.

A friend of mine recently chastised me (and rightfully so!)
for trying to get through difficult situations on my own.   I am someone
who tends to push away love and support.

I have a hard time asking for help.

When others try to help me, it makes me squirmy.

It makes me feel like I’m putting them out.

I practically apologize before asking anyone for a favor.

However, if you need me, I’ll give you everything I have.  If you’re in a crisis, I’m your man.

Just say the word, and I’ll put on my man pants and get
moving.

I got man pants in my closet in every color and every size.  I have them for my skinny days, my fat days, from
my pre-baby days, post baby days, and PMS days, of course.

I have man pants that go with Doc Martens, I have man pants
that go with my black high heel wedgie boots.
I have man pants that go with running shoes and sandals.  I have man pants that are hemmed for heels
and others that are hemmed for flats. Whatever the day, and whatever the
occasion, I have man pants that fit.

I will leap tall buildings, (looking stylishly fierce in my
man pants, of course) in a single bound to put out that fire for you, but
please don’t feel like you need to fight that fire for me.

When little Miss F. was born, I needed help so badly that I
forgot to put on my man pants. I surrounded myself with a posse of new mothers
who supported me.  They listened to me
bitch about the sleepless nights.   They calmed the fears I had over every little
baby cry and sniffle, and they rallied for me when I re-entered the work force
when baby F. was only 12 weeks old.  I
was so out of my mind those first few months, that the man pants were an
afterthought.

However, soon thereafter, the man pants were on.  I was sleeping through the night and running
through my high octane life, back in the driver’s seat, wearing my man pants.

When I began The
Fierce Diva Guide to Life
, I was wearing some pretty funky man pants.

Go ahead, look at my profile photo.  They’re funky all right!

Those are my bad-ass, wide legged yoga man pants (that go
great with Doc Martens, mind you).

I have about 5 pairs of them (truth!) so that a day never
has to go by that I can’t look like a super cool cat yogi in my bad-ass yogi
man pants.

Except, not long into my blogging days, I realized I would
not be able to make it out there in the blogosphere on my own.  Even wearing my man pants.

I needed support.

The man pants had to come off, figuratively, at least.

That’s when I hooked up with the SITS Girls.

The SITS Girls is more than a blogging network.  It’s a sisterhood.  As a SITS Girl, I am part of a community of
over 40,000 bloggers supporting each other in our goals.  The SITS Girls website includes a featured
daily blogger (today it’s me!), as well as blog tips, social media tutorials,
and discussion forums.  They advise you
how to get a new blog off the ground, how to make money blogging, and how to
make your site pretty. Their resources are innumerable and invaluable.

It is the warmest, fuzziest, fiercest community of female bloggers out
there.

I have met the MOST WONDERFUL WOMEN EVER through SITS.

My blog has an audience, thanks to SITS.

I got over my fear of Twitter thanks to SITS!

Some days, thanks to SITS, I even leave home without my man
pants.

(Don’t worry, I am wearing something on the bottom.
Just not those.)

Namaste, SITS Girls!

Thank you for this wonderful day!

  1. I, too, subscribe to the theory we are responsible for our own happiness! Thank you for reminding us of that, because it is a hard lesson to learn. 🙂 It’s so nice to meet you from SITS.

  2. Glad to be a part of your wonderful SITS Day!
You’re a talented writer, and we are truly sisters or SITSta’s. How you described yourself in this post sounded just like me! I have got to get much better at asking for help, online as much as offline.
    Blessings to you.
Enjoy your special day (today and every day)!

  3. I am new to SITS, and your post really made me warm up to new possibilities..thank you!
Man pants – love it! But I have a feeling whatever adorns you hips, you’d be leaping tall buildings:) And how lovely you have that community around you for when that coat of armor needs to come off! Looking forward to digging in further…

  4. Happy SITS day! I love your post about how we really need each other. I always try to do things on my own, and often fail. Great reminder. Off to read more of your blog and follow you!

  5. Happy SITS day! I really really REALLY identify with that struggle to ask for help. I’m SO bad at it, and you’re right. We need each other out here in the blogosphere!!

  6. I agree that we make our own happiness…. even if some days that’s a little harder than others ;-). Congrats on your day!

  7. My husband just fussed at me for trying to avoid asking for help. I keep my “man pants” on ALL DAY… I am just getting into SITS, and you are right – the support is amazing! Happy SITS day to you… 🙂

  8. Happy SITS Day! It truly is a wonderful community. I also have a hard time asking people for help…and I love the man pants analogy, haha! 🙂

  9. I too have a very hard time asking for help…though I really should…I have 9 kids and am new to SITS. Very happy to hear about what you have experienced in the SITS community. Looking forward to having a lot of fun! The Garden Goat

  10. Well I have to say that is the BEST introduction to SITS I have read yet. Well done!
I too have a horrible time with asking for help from others – and in fact do apologize (profusely) when I have to ask for some (which I know is so ridiculous).
Happy SITS day to you, and please enjoy all the extra love your bound to receive today!

  11. That has to be one of the coolest and most unique SITS day posts I have ever, ever read!
    You rock!
It’s good to remember we ALL need someone sometimes, and SITS is a great group!

  12. You make the term man-pants sound sexy. I would never have thought of it that way, but I do believe in raising my daughters to be strong (even if they adore dresses). Your post made me smile!
Tina – mom of 4 and author of 5 blogs

  13. What a creative blog post! Love these reflections… I’m new to SITS but am learning a lot already, too. Enjoy your SITS day!

  14. Happy SITS Day! I can totally relate to not wanting to put anyone out. I fight against going it alone most days. I am a military wife and the collective WE DO NOT like to ask for help.

  15. I can relate with you when it comes to asking folks for help. I even hate to ask my closet family members for help with even the smallest things. *sigh*
I hope that you are having a wonderful SITS day. I literally JUST joined and I’m excited about it all.
BTW, your man pants look bossy with those boots.

  16. Here for SITS day! I can totally relate to your quandary–I hate asking anyone for anything. It’s really difficult for me to admit that I can’t make it on my own! But I’d like to think that I’m getting better!
Love your man pants by the way!

  17. I super suck at asking for help— maybe there should be a support group— but wait… that really wouldn’t work ‘cus then we’d all have to ask for help and that just wouldn’t happen.
    Your docs rock— a lot!

  18. aawww!! I feel the same way (guilty almost) about asking others for help. So … those really are man pants huh? I never thought to try them out b/c sometimes women pants just don’t seem to fit! anyway … nice post!

  19. I read an interesting article about how women apologize way too often. Now that I’m conscience of it I see I do it all the time. So, don’t apologize when you need help, we all need help sometimes and we can’t get anywhere, really, on our own. Happy SITS day!

  20. Bask in the awesomeness of your SITS day. Bask, I tell you!
    Good blog post!
Jessica recently posted, So, Foxes Make Good Pets, Right?.

  21. Such a great post for your SITS day! I’ve learned a ton from SITS, and having such a great support group is wonderful! Hope you enjoyed your day!

  22. For some reason, I’m only now reading this post. I hope you had a great SITS Day! SITS has helped me so much. I love the support I get from the SITS community! (And that’s how I found your blog!)

  23. Happy SITS day! I have trouble letting people help me too. Like big time. For example, my wedding…. I think I can do it on my own. I know I can’t. I’m trying to do it on my own anyway.Crazy trouble. Anyway, great blog!! I can’t wait to read more!

  24. Welcome to SITS, Dez, and thanks for being a part of my special day. Thanks for the vote of confidence on my being able to leap tall buildings – although sometimes, it’s nice to have a little boost from the people below – or should I say I am finally warming up to the possibility of accepting help? xo

  25. Mary – theSITSGirls.com
Great blogging tips and tutorials and discussion forums plus…
You must become a featured blogger for them. You must! Your message and writing are too awesome not to share everywhere!
I want you to have to rocking day that I had on Wednesday.

  26. Oh, you are just the awesome. Appearing over at SITS AND Shell’s place… all in the same week?! KUDOS TO YOU!
I love that you have manpants. I just wore my yoga manpants yesterday and it felt great to pull those suckers on again. I think they missed me as much as I missed them. Anyway, it’s always great to meet a fellow yogi and someone who seems to share much in common with me (at least from what I’ve read so far).
Hope you loved your day in the spotlight and wishing you a wonderful weekend! NAMASTE and happy FALL!

  27. A little late getting to your site…loved the whole “man pants” concept! You described me to a T. All of a sudden I found myself a couple of years ago unable to handle anything on my own. The bottom fell out of my health, my mind, my spirit…and I needed so much help. It was the hardest thing to do, and yet I saw the joy on their faces that I get when I get to be there for someone else. Thank you for this incredible perspective! Congrats on a great response!
