I Got Your Back

“It’s not going to work,” I say.  “There’s just no way.” “Why not?”  She asks, setting a glass of water down on the table for me to drink. I have been torn the last few weeks, really torn, over what to do about work.  I need to generate more income, yet the thought of going back to the corporate world that I came from makes me anxious. I recall the days of trying to “juggle it all,” being the only adult left in the house after 7:00 in the morning, not yet showered, and up against three rogue kids … Continue reading

How Not to Hold a Grudge

The bitch and I share the driver’s seat as I drive to the studio.  She’s taking up most of the space. “Can you please find your own seat?”  I ask.     “Shut up, bitch,” she snaps back.   “Who do you think you’re talking to?  You’re the bitch!” “Like you’re completely innocent.” I turn up the music and block her out.  The seat feels pretty cramped, but I manage.  You may not see my inner bitch, even if we’re in the same room, but every now and then, she takes over.    Like today. I’ve been holding some grudges, and … Continue reading

Friends

At first, it was a novelty, reconnecting with people you lost touch with in fifth grade.  They moved away or changed schools, decades before the digital age, and it seemed as if they had disappeared from your life forever. Then, it became a convenient way to stay abreast of the daily ins and outs of your current friends. You don’t talk to them as much as you used to, because you see what’s going on in their lives through Facebook. Then, you get angry with them, because they posted pictures of the awesome girl’s night out you weren’t invited to.  … Continue reading

Got Friends?

We’re at a birthday party for one of the children from school. We know each other casually and have been making small talk the past hour and a half through the magician, pin the tail on the donkey, and musical chairs.  We hit it off beautifully and go as far as discussing a potential park date during the upcoming spring break.  The crowd sings “Happy Birthday,” and before I know it, you approach me with a slice of cake. “Here,” you say, as you hand me the plate. “No thank you,” I reply. “It’s good, you have to try it.” … Continue reading

I Believe In You

“Mom!  Mom, you’re never going to guess what!”  I shouted excitedly into the phone. My mother was my second phone call, right after my husband with the news that one of my screenplays had made it into the semi –final round of what was arguably the most prestigious screenwriting competition in the United States. It was 2002, and I felt unstoppable.  I had used every spare moment of my life to write fiction, and my writing had begun to harness attention from literary agents and other players in the industry. “Oh, that’s nice, honey,” my mother responded, in the same … Continue reading

My Almost Meet-Up With @acctodenise

Earlier this week, joking around on Twitter, I fabricated a fantasy meet up among some of my favorite blogging girlfriends, people I’ve never met in person, but all who have a special place in my heart. In my fantasy, Christine, Michelle, Mary, Kristen, Denise and I all meet up in Maryland, where three out of the six of us live.  In the Twitter conversation, Michelle even offered me a place to say, saying that I could bunk up with her visiting in-laws (you were serious, Michelle, right?  I’m a very low maintenance house guest.  So long as I have access … Continue reading

I Steal Cars

"Why do you want to take my car?"  he asked. I could tell by his tone that he was uneasy with the request. "Mine does better on gas," I replied.  We were on a tight budget.  My econo-box got at least fifteen miles more per gallon than my husband's full sized SUV.  When my husband started commuting to school once a week last September, it made sense for him to take the car that was more economical on the road.   "All right, where are your keys," he responded.  He wasn't convinced this was a good idea. I remember that … Continue reading

Dogs Conquer All

When I told my husband that we needed "dog energy" in our house, he looked at me as if I had three heads.  I'm used to this look. As the poster girl for "Yoga-As-The-Answer," this is the same look I get from my husband when I mention to him that one of my chakras is out of alignment, or that I'm having trouble focusing with my third eye.  "Maybe your third eye needs glasses," my husband will say from across the dinner table, devouring his steak and mashed potatoes, as I sit opposite him with my plate of quinoa and … Continue reading

How I Won the Heart of Justin Timberlake

I knew I was staring but couldn't stop myself.  He tapped his foot on the floor to the rhythm of the music as he silently mouthed the words to the song, with a slight exaggeration to his expression.  He was completely into what he was doing.  He was adorable.    Trixie was right.  The DJ did look like Justin Timberlake. Except the "real" JT was older by comparison.  This kid could not have been more than twenty-three?  Twenty-four?     He provided the entertainment at the First Holy Communion party for Trixie's daughter, held at a banquet hall tucked away in … Continue reading

MJ Goes Down

We were surrounded by them, a small army of corporate fembots in Ann Taylor suits and Kate Spade shoes who doubled as informants for the bosses.  MJ had a code name for each of them that she'd use in her emails or texts, when one of them was up to no good. "Gucci Pants in the vending machine corner on her cell phone.  Whispering.  Someone's busted!"  "Peep Show  complaining that we take too long on our work.  She really needs to button up her shirt."   MJ was as tough as steel.  She worked like a machine, she could drop … Continue reading
